It happens in seconds. A driver engages reverse. Someone steps into the blind spot — a colleague, a banksman, a passer-by. By the time anyone realises, it is already too late.

Last year produced a relentless succession of prosecutions, each carrying the same HSE verdict: preventable. In October 2025, Marlborough Highways was fined £1 million at the City of London Magistrates' Court after a worker was killed by a reversing vehicle on a north London construction site — the driver receiving a suspended custodial sentence. In the same month, Birmingham manufacturer Northwood Consumer Limited was fined £240,000 after David Saint, 61, a grandfather described by his daughter as 'my everything', was struck and killed crossing a service road by a reversing HGV. In June, London Energy Ltd was fined £400,000 at Westminster Magistrates' Court after a council worker was crushed by a reversing loader at its Edmonton waste facility. And Biffa was handed a record £2.48 million fine after James Tabiri, 57, was struck from behind by a reversing skip wagon at its Bradford site and died under the rear wheels — despite CCTV showing workers routinely bypassing segregation barriers in the days before the incident.

The danger does not stay on site. On 1 September 2025, an 89-year-old woman died on Brookes Street, Llandudno, after being struck by a Conwy Council recycling lorry. She was not a worker. She was simply on the street. A man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. The danger zone around a reversing HGV does not stop at the gate.

Struck by a moving vehicle has ranked in the top three causes of UK workplace fatality every single year since 2001. In 2024/25 it claimed 14 workers. Transport and storage entered the top three most dangerous sectors for the first time. The fines from reversing fatalities in 2025 alone exceeded £5 million. None of that money brings anyone back.

How ReverseSmart Works — Under the Bonnet

Doctor Air Brake's ReverseSmart is not a camera, and it is not a passive proximity sensor that puts the burden back on an already stretched driver. It is an active, autonomous braking system — and the engineering behind it is what makes it genuinely different.

A short-range radar unit, typically rear-mounted, continuously sweeps a fully programmable detection zone. Operators configure the beam's width, height and depth to match the vehicle and working environment — a tipper in a quarry approach needs a very different setup to a refuse vehicle on a residential street. The system adapts to both.

When a person or object enters that zone, a graduated alert fires: audible and visual warnings on the cab-mounted display, escalating in urgency as the hazard closes. If the driver doesn't respond — through distraction, obscured sightlines, or a situation that simply develops faster than human reaction allows — ReverseSmart takes over. It autonomously applies the service brakes.

That last point matters technically. ReverseSmart applies the service brake, not the park brake. Applying the park brake on a moving laden HGV risks severe drivetrain shock, gearbox damage and dangerous yaw on a gradient. Instead, the system uses a pulsed, progressive braking strategy — a controlled series of applications that bring the vehicle to a smooth, firm stop. The vehicle holds for three seconds before the system resets, giving anyone in the danger area time to move clear. A throttle-kill function prevents the driver inadvertently powering through the braking cycle.

Integration runs via CAN Bus — the Controller Area Network that all modern HGVs use for ECU-to-ECU communication. ReverseSmart speaks the vehicle's own language, preserving the OEM warranty and ensuring braking commands enter the system at the correct point in the braking hierarchy. Speed-increment braking scales the braking force proportionally to vehicle speed at the moment of activation. Steering angle detection adjusts the active radar zone dynamically as the vehicle steers, tracking the actual reversing arc rather than a fixed rearward projection that could miss objects to the side of the swept path.

For fleet managers, MDVR integration is arguably as valuable as the autobrake itself. Every activation is timestamped and recorded with video footage — an evidenced, contemporaneous record that cannot be retrospectively altered. In an HSE investigation, a police inquiry, or a civil claim, that footage changes the conversation entirely. A manual override is available for reversing close to fixed structures, but reactivates automatically after 30 seconds. It cannot be left disabled. The system works on diesel, electric and hydrostatic HGVs — any air-braked vehicle. It carries full VCA type approval, manufactured and software-written entirely in the UK, with regular audit-verified production conformity.

The Technology Exists. Use It.

The HSE's own Deputy Director said it plainly in 2025: these failures are not complex. They are simple, and they cost far less to fix than the fines imposed afterwards. Over £5 million in penalties. David Saint. James Tabiri. An 89-year-old woman in Llandudno. Every one of them preventable. ReverseSmart doesn't ask drivers to be perfect. It just makes sure that when they aren't, the vehicle stops anyway.
