Because a reversing HGV doesn’t give second chances. By the time a driver realises something, or someone is behind the vehicle, the physics have usually already decided the outcome. Mirrors may not show the full picture. Banksmen blink. Cameras show you the danger a fraction of a second after it’s too late to do anything useful about it. For the operators of refuse trucks, road sweepers, tar sprayers and plant, that blind few feet behind the cab is where reputations, insurance records and lives get lost.

Doctor Air Brake has spent years refusing to accept that as “just how it is.” That’s why the manufacturer is putting its answer front and centre at Stoneleigh: ReverseSmart – next-generation radar auto-braking – paired with a rear visual camera system that doesn’t just watch the danger, it records the moment the truck stopped itself.

The truck that brakes for you

ReverseSmart isn’t a beeping sensor that adds to the noise a driver is already tuning out. It’s an intervention. A 77GHz radar that continuously scans a configurable danger zone around the vehicle. When something enters that zone, the system warns the driver with both audible and visual alerts on a dash-mounted display and, if the driver doesn’t react, it applies the brakes itself and brings the vehicle to a controlled stop.

Crucially, it does this through pulsing service braking – a smooth, controlled stop, rather than slamming on the park brake, which over time can chew through gearboxes and other driveline components. It works in reverse and, below an adjustable speed threshold.. “That matters” says Jeff Lowe MD of Dr Air Brake “Enormously for a road sweeper driver who has to watch the kerb line while staying alert to everything else happening around the vehicle”.

Tuned to the job, not the brochure

The clever part – and the bit competitors struggle to match – is how far the system can be tailored to a specific vehicle and a specific operation. ReverseSmart is fully programmable:

  • Detection and alert zones set to the width, height and length of beam you actually need
  • Speed-increment braking and adjustable braking force
  • Steering-angle detection so the system understands where the vehicle is genuinely heading
  • A manual override for those moments when a driver deliberately needs to reverse tight to a wall or object, reactivating automatically after a preset period (30 seconds as standard)
  • Vibration testing and a throttle-kill function built in

It fits diesel, electric and hydrostatic HGVs alike. And because Doctor Air Brake manufactures the hardware and writes all of its own software, the system isn’t a bought-in black box, it can be adapted, supported and developed in-house, in the UK.

The camera that proves what happened

Here’s where the second innovation earns its place on the stand. ReverseSmart integrates with an onboard camera and MDVR system, so the rear of the vehicle is no longer a mystery, it’s on screen, time stamped and on record.

Every auto-brake activation is data-logged with video footage. So when there’s a near miss, a complaint, or an incident under investigation, there’s no he-said-she-said: there’s a timestamped clip of the radar detecting the hazard and the truck stopping itself. For fleet managers, insurers and council safety officers, that’s the difference between an allegation and an answer. It protects the vulnerable road user first – and the operator second.

Why this should be standard, not optional

Doctor Air Brake makes no apology for the blunt argument: in waste collection, road sweeping, road rolling, tar spraying and now used on quarries and other off road environments, radar auto-braking shouldn’t be a premium add-on – it should be a baseline expectation. The case is hard to argue with:

  • Collision avoidance and genuine protection for vulnerable road users
  • Fewer rear-end shunts, and the slashed repair bills that come with intact light clusters, bumpers and doors
  • Lower insurance exposure and a fleet reputation that stays intact
  • A clear, evidenced route to demonstrating safety compliance

Local authorities and operators running vehicles in busy, pedestrian-heavy environments are exactly one of the primary audience this technology was built for – and exactly the audience that can no longer say the technology doesn’t exist.

See it for yourself at RTX 2026

Don’t take the spec sheet’s word for it, come and watch it work. Doctor Air Brake will be exhibiting at the Road Transport Expo (RTX) 2026, the UK road transport sector’s biggest summer fixture, which returns to NAEC Stoneleigh, Warwickshire from 30 June to 2 July 2026. The show is free to attend and expected to draw more than 14,000 visitors across three days.

Bring your toughest reversing scenario, your most awkward depot layout, your worst near-miss story – and let’s talk about how to make sure it never becomes the headline. Because the question Doctor Air Brake keeps asking the industry is a simple one: why risk it, when you can stop it?
